anyway im posting this since im not able to find an answer myself. ive been wondering these days, what defines a poser-band? i mean is there something that when you listen to BFMV or Bring me the Horizon you realise that they are not true metal? i hated these guys from the beginning since i was lucky to start with the real stuff but a person who doesnt know many bands i dont think can tell the difference only with the sound. And im writing all this because i was listening to "waking the demon" while reading a line in PMLO's page which said "i'll upload all kinds of metal as long as it is not fake". some guidance would be much appreciated Razz

I suppose the easiest bands to call 'true' really would be bands that aren't in it to make money or get the girls and want to purely send out a message and make music. But that doesn't mean that bands who have musicianship as their full time jobs should be called 'posers' because they make their livings out of it. It's a matter of opinion really. Personally I like bands that stay true to the roots of their genre - but that being said, I like bands that play something different such as Wintersun for example. You see these scene kids around all over the place with their deathcore shirts and whatever and wonder how heavy metal was diluted into this. I'm not sure whether Bring Me The Horizon themselves actually think any of their songs sound good and pleasing to the ear but I get the impression that a lot of their fans wouldn't really care what they released next as long as it included incoherent screaming and some breakdowns. As far as metal is concerned I listen to the main genres and their sub genres. e.g. Black + Death = Blackened Death. I just find it difficult to take a band seriously when they have emo fringes and the majority of their crowd consists of screaming girls with similar fringes. I hate to judge a band on its image but there is a limit.
As for telling the difference then I suppose you would have to start at the beginning of heavy metal's history and listen to bands from there. See the different styles branch out over time and then compare to the pop music which metal is so allegedly against. Ask yourself, if it weren't just a wall of sound, allowing the radio stations to play it, would Bring Me The Horizon fans really be so rebellious as to not listen to it? Of course not. I doubt that they would even think it weird that it was broadcasted. What I'm trying to say is that there is such a different frame of mind between the metal fans and the 'posers'.

Yeah that's probably the best answer you can get, it's not very describable. I don't mind if the band gets a little wacky but if it's all about money it goes far from where it should be. It is their job, but it should be fun and passion for the musicians too. Just like game industry is getting ridiculous cause of publishers like EA and Activision, they only want to make money. But that's maybe a different thing than posing (a little ot but very reasonable I think), I maybe would not call the band as easily posers as their fans are. Like Slipknot or CoB kiddos out there, just too many of them (I don't listen to Slipknot anyways, I don't like it, CoB is a fine band way or another). Again, PMLO described it well enough. Just commentin'

Children of Bodom are all well and good but they seem to have let themselves get swept along into all of the scene kid stuff..it's a shame really. Still..Follow the Reaper and Hatebreeder are two of my favourite albums.

first of all i want to thank you for your great answers, you've been much helpful Very Happy also i am aware of COB's change of style with Blooddrunk and this the very reason ive never heard this album. COB are my fav band and as pmlo said Follow the Reaper as well as their previous stuff are awesome. To tell the truth i have a feeling that metal is slowly dying these days. Metallica, COB, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray....every new release of a big metal band seems like thrash if we compare it to their previous work. That's why we should keep searching and support smaller bands, who have newer approaches to music. I wonder what's to become of metal anyway in the near future.

Yep, I am with you on that one.
That's why I support alot of local and smaller bands.
Blooddrunk is a pretty good album though, I think it's pretty good. But nothing compared to the early work from CoB.

There is alot of good stuff going on in the underground at the moment. Keep an eye out! lol!

Wow the bottom of the home page says that we had 44 users on the site on Saturday night at one point...Considering the previous record was only about 13 users, can anyone explain that? scratch Shocked
